When You're Feeling Stressed, These 4 Simple Tips Can Help You Find Instant Relief
Stress is a normal part of life, but that doesn't mean it feels good. When you're dealing with stress, it can be hard to think straight or see the light at the end of the tunnel. If you're feeling overwhelmed, know that you're not alone—and that there are things you can do to de-stress in the moment. From deep breathing to journaling, these simple tips can help you find instant relief.
1. Take a few deep breaths.
When you're feeling stressed, your body goes into fight-or-flight mode, which means your heart rate and blood pressure increase and your muscles tense up. One of the quickest ways to counteract this is by taking some slow, deep breaths. inhale through your nose for four counts, hold your breath for seven counts, and then exhale through your mouth for eight counts. Repeat this cycle a few times until you start to feel your body relax.
2. Get moving.
Exercise is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress because it helps release feel-good hormones like endorphins and serotonin. And you don't have to go run a marathon—even a small amount of movement can make a difference. Take a brisk walk around the block or do some simple stretches at your desk. Anything that gets your body moving and your heart rate up will help relieve stress.
3. Connect with someone you trust.
When you're feeling stressed, it can be helpful to talk to someone who will understand and can offer support. Call a friend or family member who always makes you feel better or meet up with a colleague for coffee and vent about what's going on. Just having someone to listen and offer words of wisdom can make all the difference when you're feeling frazzled.
4. Journal about what's stressing you out.
Writing down your thoughts can help you work through them and see things from a different perspective. Grab a notebook and pen and spend 10 minutes free writing about what's stressing you out—no editing or judgment allowed! Once you've got all your thoughts on paper, read through what you've written and see if any patterns emerge or if there's anything you can do to change the situation for the better.
Stress is inevitable, but that doesn't mean it has to take over your life. The next time you're feeling overwhelmed, use these four simple tips to find instant relief—and get back to enjoying your day stress-free!
